Adios!!

I was supposed to make this announcement on my birthday but some things got in the way and I just couldn't go through with my plan. Truth is, I just wasn't ready.

The saying "All good things come to an end." couldn't be more true. I've had a fantastic run, I should think. This here blog has been my constant online companion for over a year. It's been with me through several rough times (not really that rough..medyo lang), some really good times, new places, and numerous adventures. This blog has also been witness to my kids' growing up and my growing a wee bit older.

There wasn't a day that this blog didn't figure in my activities. Somehow I would always manage to sneak even just a peek or else my day just wouldn't be complete.

Through this blog I was able to meet new online friends and some of them even became real life friends. Something I didn't really expect considering that I only started this out as an outlet for my thoughts.

But enough with the rambling...as I have said...this is it. THIS IS IT?!?

NO FREAKING WAY!! Cmon...I'm just moving to my new home...WOOHOO!!

Remember that contest I won sometime February? This post?

Ok, so I finally figured out how to make it work. Yep...it took me that long. I told you I was a tech-idiot. That's what got in the way.

So before I bid my adieu..allow me thank some really special people for making this move possible. First, many many many thanks to my host, Noemi, for choosing me as one of the winners. Thank you so much for liking my post and for encouraging me to make the move. And to my former online pal now real-life buddy, Chats, for coaching me on the intricacies of Wordpress blogging. Even though we didn't manage to have our "tutorial" over coffee, it was your hints that finally did it for me.

What else...hmm...I guess that's it!! To all...please update your readers....I'm now moving to my new home...my very own...I have my own dot com..yahoo....see you all at....

Litratong Pinoy : Itay at Pag-Aaral

Pag-Aaral

Di nga ba may kasabihang, "All work and no play makes Juan/Juana a dull kid." Totoo yan.

Isa lang naman lagi ang mensahe nya, "If you have one iota of a doubt, don't do it."

"If he lays a finger on you, I'll make him float in Pasig River!"

Sayan nga lamang at bigla syang nagkasakit.

(12 years old ako nyan)

High School Prom Night (hinatid nya ako, bawal ang sundo)

Palawan Adventure : Days 1 & 2

Our Palawan escapade started last Tuesday. We left Manila on the first flight to Puerto Princesa at around 8:00 a.m. This meant being at the airport at 6:00 a.m., which meant getting up at 4:00 a.m. and leaving the house at 5:15 a.m.

We managed to grab a light breakfast at the airport but ended up still hungry by the time we boarded the plane.

We arrived at Puerto Princesa at a little past 9:00 a.m. Our "sundo" was already waiting by the baggage area. We were to be whisked off to San Vicente around 3 hours or 190 kilometers from the city. Its a good thing that the driver had to drop some things off somewhere so that left us a good hour and a half to rest. We asked to be dropped of at the Asturias Hotel so we could freshen up, eat, and confirm our reservation for the rest of the trip after our San Vicente sojourn.

Being really hungry, I ordered what any hungry Pinoy would love for breakfast. Daing. I love the daing from Palawan. Its not too salty. And there is no fishy taste. Those were 2 eggs, btw. I was that hungry.

After our quick meal, our "sundo" was back to take us to San Vicente. The first leg of our journey.

The northernmost part of Palawan that I've ever visited is Puerto Princesa. We were always going south back in the day so this trip was truly an adventure for me.

The ride was mostly bumpy. For those who are "maselan" this is not for you. More than half the way was dirt road. There were also several kilometers of mountain road..zigzagging like crazy. And yes..they were dirt roads too. Add to that a driver who thinks he's competing in the Dakar rally and who doesn't know the meaning of the word "menor" made for an impossibly horrific ride.

However, the scene that would meet us was more than enough to make up for the horrendous ride.

Our host was the mayor of San Vicente, Antonio Gonzalez, and he booked us at the uber exclusive Caparii resort. It is situated in a private cove and the owners made sure that they maintained the natural beauty of the place. The resort used to be a dive camp. After its run as a dive camp, it was transformed into a private retreat by the owners. From what I heard, you had to be invited to be able to spend a night there. Lately, though, they have been taking in a few walk-in patrons at 4000 bucks a night per person. Pretty steep but once you're there, you'll understand why.

San Vicente is at the cusp of being hailed as the newest and freshest alternative to Boracay. They have a 14 kilometer beach with sands as fine and as white as Boracay. This beach is called "Long Beach" and is reputedly the longest stretch of beach in the Philippines. Several big investors have already started buying up property and an international airport is now being built just 10 minutes away from the beach.

Personally, I would prefer that it remain rustic. Maybe a few inns, small hotels, and restaurants will do. But nothing as fancy and as chi-chi as those in Boracay. The charm and the beauty of San Vicente is its untouched ambience. To ruin it with commercialism is just wrong. I really hope our tourism officials can do something to prevent the destruction of this paradise.

On our 2nd and last day, we were toured by our hosts around the baranggay. We visited a quaint fishing village where humoungous 5-kg. fishes were selling for Php 80 only!! And they were already supposed to be expensive at that price. They say that on good days, you can get those fishes for 20 bucks each. Can you believe that?!?

We also saw the future marina that will be built by the owner of Big Foot Productions. He had his 3 yachts docked there. This fellow is a big fan of San Vicente and already owns several islands and huge tracts of land there.

Just before heading back to the resort for lunch, our host brought us to what is known as "Overlooking" or the highest point in San Vicente. From here you can see the entire "Long Beach" and its neighboring islands. This is also the future site of a lighthouse to be built by the owner of Big Foot, again.

After a delicious seafood lunch, we were back on the road for another 3 hour harrowing ride back to Puerto Princesa. When we arrived back at the hotel, all we wanted to do was sleep.

Weekend Snapshot : The Beach at San Vicente

After my trip to the island of Palawan last February, I was really longing to go back. The fact is, I really had to make a return trip to take care of unfinished business.

Growing up, I spent several summer and semestral break vacations in southern Palawan. My father used to run a minesite there. This was near the beach. I remember taking boat trips with the local fishermen and exploring the nearby coves and islands.

Its been years since then so when I had the chance to visit Palawan again I was really more than happy. It still is the Philippines' "last frontier."

This time around, I was able to visit the northern shores of the island. The municipality of San Vicente is home to what is known as "Long Beach" which is 14 kilometers of unspoiled, untouched, and unadulterated shoreline. It is poised to be the next "Boracay" what with its fine, sugary sands and aquamarine waters.

As soon as I set foot there I found myself a hammock and soaked in the scenery. I also managed to catch a quick nap after being swayed by the breeze and the melodic splashing of the waves.

It's My Birthday and I'll Cry If I Want To

Today I turned a sweet 40. Proudly a member of the middle aged bunch.

40 years ago I was almost brought into the world on a taxi cab. The driver, fortunately, was able to get my Mom to the ER right in the nick of time. The cabbies name, btw, was Angel. My father was escorted to the hospital by the same cop who flagged him down for speeding. So all in all my entry into the world came with a little drama and action. Oh I forgot..after I was born, my dad excitedly declared me illegitemate on my birth certificate. It took a month before it was finally corrected.

So...what am I going to do today? If it wasn't for this typhoon hitting us today, I'd probably be planning to go with my family to eat out. But since it's not safe to head out..we'll probably just stay home and eat leftovers. I haven't done the groceries yet.

Tomorrow I'll be 40 and a day. Maybe I can celebrate.

It's Official...Adi Has Been Accelerated!!

I'm having a proud Mama moment here!! Why shouldn't I be...my little "sungit" baby has just been accelerated.

When we enrolled Adi last year we weren't really expecting her to be serious in her schoolwork. After all she was only 2 years and 3 months when she started. She was placed in the pre-nursery class which was really more of a play class. Still, there were lessons in letters, numbers, shapes, colors and basic sequencing that were taught. The only difference was that there was not much pressure because of the children's age.

We were completely aware that Adi would be repeating pre-nursery this year because of her age, again. She's only 3 years old and the Nursery class is for kids between 4 and 4 1/2 years old.

So imagine our surprise when the head mistress of the school called 3 weeks ago asking if I could bring Adi to school for some assessment for acceleration. I didn't even have time to tell my husband, I just whisked Adi off to the school immediately.

When we got there the head mistress told me that based on Adi's performance last school year they felt that she could be moved up one level already. They just needed to do some further tests to make sure. According to her last teacher, Adi was the most mature in her class despite being the youngest. That sounded really nice and I could feel my chest swelling with pride over my little girls performance.

After a few minutes Adi was led into one of the rooms for her assessment. I couldn't hear what the teacher was asking...but I would hear clapping and faint "Very good, Adi!" every so often.

When they were done the teacher told me that they would call me after discussing Adi's results with the head mistress.

When 2 weeks passed and no call came, I assumed that Adi didn't make the cut. I didn't feel that it was a disappointment at all. I figured, maybe they saw something in Adi's behaviour that didn't seem appropriate for her to be placed in Nursery.

So, when I went to the school last Friday to drop off some requirements and to pick up the final school schedule I didn't go expecting anything.

And when I opened each child's class sked I saw that Adi's name was on the Nursery class roster!! My kid was accelerated!! Woohoo!!

You can't imagine how proud I am of my little girl.

For All The Papas Out There

Before I get lost in the moment, allow me to greet all the fathers out there a very happy Father's Day. And to all the wives and kids out there...cmon guys, lets give the men of the house some love..and maybe a little break.

So....because it is Father's Day, I thought it appropriate to honor not just one man but 2...my very own Popsy and my kids' Popsy. These are the 2 men who have really made a big...huge difference in my life.

It is also very timely that this week's "Weekly Question" is about Fathers and the lessons we have learned from them.

This weeks question is....

What valuable lessons have you learned from your father?

Me and my Popsy

From my Dad I learned a lot of things. He was the kind of man who, despite having 5 daughters, felt that we should be prepared for anything fate would throw us. He equipped us with skills meant for sons and knowledge meant for scholars. For him it was important that we be self-sufficient and that we know how to be independent. Here are some of the more important lessons he taught us..

  • Education is a priviledge. Don't waste it.
  • Money is not a means of achieving a status above others. It is a convenience.
  • Just because you have a better life does not mean you are a better person. Being a good person is something you work on.
  • Having a menial job is not something to be ashamed of.
  • Always..always have time for your family.
  • The most important aspect of one's person is his integrity.

My father was what you would call a "man's man." It wasn't easy growing up with a father who conducted himself like a general. But now that I'm grown up, I have realized that if it wasn't for that kind of strictness we might have not turned out the way we did. And now that he is gone, I carry with me the legacy of a man who believed that his family was the most important thing he ever had. This is the kind of wisdom I am now trying to impart to my children...the wisdom from a man who will remain as the one true "role model" in my life.

Not to forget...I still have another important "Father" in my life. My dearest hubby.

I honestly believe that the reason I was attracted to this man is because in more ways that I can imagine, he is so much like my father.

Hardworking, smart, stern, self-made, and a family man. The only difference between them is that he isn't as street smart as my Dad...but I guess that's my role in our family. Its funny because the kind of arguments I have with my husband are pretty much the kind of arguments I used to have with my Dad. Which gives me an upper hand because I've had years of experience in handling these tiffs. Ssshhh...he doesn't know it yet.

Gaby and her Popsy

Adi and her Popsy

So to all the Papa's out there...

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!

Litratong Pinoy : Kalayaan

mapagbabago mo alaalang taglay
sa iyo'y nagiging walang kamatayan.

Ikaw, na may diwang inibig ni Apeles
sa wika inamo ni Pebong kay rikit
sa isang kaputol na lonang maliit
ginuhit ang ganda at kulay ng langit.

Humayo ka ngayon, papagningasin mo
ang alab ng iyong isip at talino
maganda mong ngala'y ikalat sa mundo
at ipagsigawan ang dangal ng tao.

Araw na dakila ng ligaya't galak
magsaya ka ngayon, mutyang Pilipinas
purihin ang bayang sa iyo'y lumingap
at siyang nag-akay sa mabuting palad.

(Jose Rizal)

Money Talk

The husband came home early yesterday because he wanted to avoid the after-school traffic, it being the first day of school for most.

The Hezzies were playing in the street when they heard the familiar busina of their Papa's car. Overjoyed that their Dad was early, they asked to be whisked off to Mcdonalds for merienda. They've been dying to get their hands on those Kung Fu Panda toys that come with the Happy Meal.

So off we went to Mcdonalds.

On our way back, with their new Kung Fu Panda toys in hand, the girls engaged their dad in some serious talk.

Gaby, the ever-asking toy monster, said, "Papa, do you know what I want for a present? I want a pink pony. No, I want a cute little bear. Puhleeze!" (with matching batting of the eyelashes)

Papa answers with, "Di ba we said you can ask only if its your birthday and Christmas. Tapos na birthday mo. You'll have to wait for Christmas. Tsaka, naubos na money natin kasi you keep buying toys."

And then Adi joins in and pipes, "You don't have money anymore, Papa? It's ok, I'll go to the bank and buy you plenty money. You like that?"

Sweetness...albeit a bit distorted.

Loompy

I was tagged by Mitch to do this meme on favorite, first toys.

Originally, it was supposed to be Adi's toy but since she has never fancied toys (she prefers books) I asked if I could volunteer Gaby instead. Why? Because between the 2, Gaby is the toy monster.

Of all her toys, Gaby's favorite is this floppy toy elephant she calls Loompy (pronounced as LAWMPEE). It was given to her as a pasalubong by her Ninong who came from a trip to the US of A.

She immediately developed a deep affection for the elephant. She would take him everywhere. Sleep with him. And even bathe with him. On those rare occasions that we were able to wash him (usually when he started smelling like laway), she would sit by the garden and watch him as he hung from the sampayan. She would wait for him to dry up and get Loompy herself as soon as he was dry.

One day, I felt that Loompy should be replaced because his stuffing started feeling rather uneven. I got Gaby a new elephant but she just took one look at him and tossed him aside. Several other elephants came her way (care of well meaning relatives who had the same thing in mind) but she still would not give up Loompy.

Of all her toys, Loompy is the most well travelled. He has been to Subic, Tagaytay, Pampanga, Laguna, several malls and several hotels in the metro. He is one lucky elephant.

Nowadays, Loompy has been given a brief respite from his chores as Gaby's resident companion. Gaby has discovered some of her other toys and has put Loompy back in the toy shelf..for the meantime. Still, he makes an occasional appearance during her "toy assemblies" where she rounds up all her fave toys..gives them a pep talk...tells them stories....and if they're lucky....she'll even give them a free makeover.

Now I'd like to know about the favorite toy of Nicole, Andrea, Tania, Sandra, MC, and Andre.

Here’s the rule: Post a photo of your baby with her first ever favorite/comfort toy. Write some details of your fondest memory of your baby and her toy (like what I did below). This will make a good memento when your baby grows up!Lastly, before you pass this on to six (or more) mommies, don’t forget to add the link to your website/s at the end of the page. I’m sure many moms would love to see your sites, too!

Weekend Snapshot : Ballet School Visit

Here are pictures of my future ballerinas while watching real ballerinas. I took them to a "real" ballet studio to see if they have any plans of continuing with their lessons. I'm not the kind of mother who would impose on her kids. After they finished their "summer ballet lessons" they asked if they could rest and enjoy the rest of their vacation. They still haven't told me if they plan to continue with their lessons but judging from the looks of awe on their faces...I think I'll be signing some enrolment forms pretty soon.

Another One Bites The Dust

I guess most everyone knows that action star and Philippine movie idol, Rudy Fernandez, succumbed to cancer last Saturday. I'm not a big fan of his but his death has just jarred a few memories that I've quietly laid to rest ever since my own father died 2 years ago.

Back then I remember I used to joke my Dad that he was "classmates" with Daboy at the Cancer Center of Cardinal Santos Memorial Center. It was a common term used by cancer patients which referred to fellow patients who were undergoing either chemotherapy or radiation treatment. It became somewhat like a club because we would see the same faces day in and day out. Daboy wasn't very visible but the special care nurses there would always make "chismis" if he was around. I suppose he didn't want to be seen. Even before the news broke out about his illness, we already knew by virtue of this "chismis." Actually, there were a lot of "famous" faces there. All of them hopeful...some hopeless.

I remember having numerous lunches and dinners at the Cancer Center while waiting for my father to finish his bi-monthly chemo sessions. And during his daily radiation sessions, I would even take Gaby along and park her in the "Kid's Playroom" where she would mingle with the juvenile patients.

My father never saw Daboy...but I did. He looked healthy then. Much like how most of us remember him. And yes, I did get a kick out of seeing him because he was so handsome. Never mind that LT was right beside him.

Anyway, after each patient would finish his treatment...they were given certificates of completion (a mug which had the words "I'm A Graduate" inscribed on it) and a little more hope that they could face the rest of their days in better health and higher spirits.

In my Dad's case, he only lasted a month after his graduation. We pretty much knew it was going to happen. It didn't sneak up on us in the dead of the night like a specter waiting to envelope you in it's dark embrace. We knew. He knew.

In hindsight, I guess that made it less painful. We were able to prepare. That's what the priest said in one of our novena masses. He said that in some ways, having a family member afflicted with cancer allows those left behind to prepare. Not only financially.....emotionally as well. Of course, it was still very painful. But when you see your loved one suffering and begging to be given something to ease the pain...you hope for something short of a miracle. And if that's not possible then you hope for eternal rest. It's the lesser evil in my book.

Anyway.....one more.....I seem to have this other thing that affiliates me to the late Daboy. His first movie...For You Mama (Sampaguita Pictures)...I was in that movie too. I was a pesky little kid then. And I had a crush on him even then. And on Romy Lapuz too. Just had to get that out.

Litratong Pinoy : Pag-Iisang Dibdib

Top Model

What does it take to be a model?

Some say you simply have to be young and beautiful. Others will say you need to have the X-factor...a certain something that sets you above the rest. Yet others will say you have to be lucky and be at the right place at the right time...maybe in time to be spotted by a talent scout.

And still there is that one chance..that one infinitesimal chance that one can win in a beauty contest like The Look of The Year that in itself can kickstart a modelling career. What girl wouldn't want that? To be able to travel the world and see yourself gracing magazine covers. To be able to walk the catwalk in places such as Paris and Milan. Now that would be the life any would be model could ever dream of.

Weekly Question #2

Let’s say it IS possible to have that one chance to be another person for a day,
who would you choose to be and why?

If I had the chance to be another person for a day I would like to be.....my Grandmother.

My "Lola" was the woman who raised me. She was one of the first "women leaders" of this country. She was a staunch supporter of women's rights even before it became fashionable.

Educated as a teacher, she rose to be the president of the Philippine Women's University. From there she was asked by the former First Lady (La Imelda) to create and head a commission solely for the purpose of furthering the plight of Filipina women. Thus, the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women was born. At this time she also led the creation of Balikatan sa Kaunlaran (BSK) that helped women in becoming income generating members of the family. She was also part of the group that started S.T.O.P. (Stop Trafficking of Pilipinas). Her other affiliations included the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), The Philippine Community Chest, The Philippine Red Cross (she was bestowed the title of Honorary Director for life), and MISCA (Manila International Sister Cities Association). And last but not the least, she was a founding member of the Bayanihan International Dance Troupe (she served as executive director until her 80's).

Other than her professional achievements, her personal achievements is something to be proud of. She was orphaned of a mother at a young age and she helped raise her siblings with her father. When she started her own family, she divided her time between work and home...this was a time when working mothers were not the norm. Her children all turned out to be fine men and women.

I can go on and on about my Lola. Suffice it to say, she is someone I will always try to emulate. If I could be her...I would...in an instant. If only to be given a chance to live such a storied life....it would be an honor.

Php65 a Liter.....I Can't Take It!!

This is the sad news that greeted me yesterday.

After the rice crisis (?), the tuition increase, the skyrocketing price of food....now this. What now? Where do we go from here? What are we to do?

All of a sudden, luxuries in life have turned into near impossibilities. That short vacation out of town is something that eats up a huge chunk of your monthly budget. And we're only talking of the travel expense. Can you imagine how much you have to spend for gas for a trip to Tagaytay!!

Without the dramatics...my husband and I talked about the possibility of selling one of the cars and purchasing a more fuel efficient vehicle instead. Our other vehicle is a diesel gulping SUV so it isn't so bad..considering that it goes at 12 km/liter of fuel. The vehicle we plan to dispose is a gas gulping (using a huge funnel...imbudo) SUV that goes at 7 km/liter. So using the Php 65 price that would mean that a trip to Makati from Quezon City (26 kms.) would cost Php 241 one way!!! A trip to Pampanga from Quezon City (52 kms.) would cost Php 482..without toll fees!! Good Lord!! And that's only one way.....dang!!

I'm still reeling.

Weekend Snapshot : Heirloom

This past Saturday, my nephew was baptized and welcomed into the world of Christians.

The garment that he donned was the very same garment that every child in our family, since yours truly, has worn at their baptism ceremony.

This frock was made from the cape of my mother's wedding dress. It is made of a very fine European silk. The lace used is Swiss lace and it was meticulously beaded with tiny seed pearls.

After every use we have it dry cleaned immediately and store it in a box lined with japanese paper and mothballs.

To date, the dress has been with us for almost 40 years. And it will stay with us forever.

Here are the other Weekenders.

I'm Making My Christmas Wishlist Early

After a 2 year absence, a much loved relative is coming home for Christmas. My favorite Ninang in the whole world will be spending the holidays with us. It's one of the reasons I'm trying to get fit..we're going to Boracay for New Year!! And she's paying for the tickets...of the Hezzies..darn!! The adults have to pay their own way. Double darn!

I grew up with her..literally. Since I was "lent" to my grandparents at a very young age, my Ninang was the one tasked to take care of me, in the absence of my own parents. Well, they weren't really absent..my grandparents just refused to give me back. But anyway...

This early, my Ninang (or SuperNinang to my kids) is already asking me to draw up my wishlist. We've been doing this forever. In fact, she is so used to my "kilometric" lists that it doesn't surprise her if I ask her for the moon and the stars.

My once "personal" list has now grown much longer because of the Hezzies. When it was just me she was shopping for, it was very easy because she knows me like the back of her hand. Sometimes she would even be able to buy stuff without my asking and I would still love what she got.

Nowadays I try to make it easier for her....I "windowshop" online first before sending her my list. And she likes it that way. I send her links to favorite shopping sites. And she never has to leave home to complete my wishlist.

Since I'm so used to "shopping" for her, I already know that blackfriday is the best time to shop for great deals. For the uninitiated, Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and is the kick-off to the Christmas shopping season. It's when you can find fantabulous shopping discounts.

Last year I was able to get a great deal on a digital camera on Bestbuy during this season. I also regularly check my all-time favorite clothing retailer, Old Navy, for great deals. And for the Hezzies...I always go to ToysRus and KbToys. Again I was able to find a Vtech writing toy for Gaby at almost half the price if I had bought it here.

So, if you'll excuse me for a bit...I have some list writing to do.

Litratong Pinoy : Sa Ihip Ng Hangin
